wedding planning groom’s parents

wedding planning groom's parents
How much financial support should the groom’s parents provide?

The bride is asking for all 3 sets of parents (groom’s parents are divorced) to split the costs 3 ways. The bride claims that her parents can’t afford a wedding due to bad investments and both of the groom’s parents are not financially stable (in a word – broke). The groom’s father has taken on a 2nd job to help and his mother’s new husband is giving up a bonus to help out when they really could have used the money to help themselves out. The brides parents have done nothing. Instead of being frugal – the bride went out and bought a $900.00 Wedding Dress and is planning on having 250 guests at $78.00 plate. Is it me or has the train derailed somewhere? At what point should the groom’s parents step in and say enough is enough?

Just my opinion . . .

If two people are mature enough to get married, then they are mature enough to pay for their wedding themselves.

If parents wish to contribute, that’s great. But they shouldn’t feel that they have to, if they are financially unable to do so.

I would suggest that parents make a gift of what they can comfortably give . . . whether that amount is $100 or $1000 or $10,000. Give bride and groom that set sum upfront. Tell them if they wish to spend more, they will need to make up the difference themselves.

Good luck to you.
