Why does everyone ask how the my wedding planning is going?
I have a friend who has initiated several conversations with me in the last while. Everyone single one of them has been about wedding planning. Isn’t the wedding the price I pay to get married, not the whole engagement?
And is it overly petty of me to plan on asking him the same thing all the time when he gets engaged?
We’ve been engaged for over a year now, aren’t getting married until May. And the reception really isn’t my party – it’s my fiance’s party. Wedding planning is not part of my life at the moment. Stressing because apparently I’m suppose to be planning (even though there’s nothing to plan) is a part of my life.
I shall re-phrase the question to: why can’t people care about me instead of the party I’m supposed to be throwing for them?
The apology would mean a lot more if it came from him. You might be good at not bothering people about things like that, but most people aren’t.
Wow, you’re really not into weddings, are you? That’s cool – but I think you’re doing your friend a disservice.
Your friend is just trying to be polite and ask about something that he assumes is taking up a lot of your time and energy. You’re taking his question in the completely wrong way – he’s not asking because he cares about the party, he’s asking because he cares about you and what you’re doing.
If you don’t want to talk about the wedding, that’s fine – just change the subject. When he asks, say, “The planning is going fine, thanks. I’ve been focused on a lot of other things right now – did I tell you about my new project at work?” And go from there.
